Start an MMM Music Group

Step 6: Growing a Sustainable Program

Congratulations! You’ve completed your first rehearsal and are setting up the routine for your group.  Here are a few things to keep in mind to keep your group running long-term:

Communication

Keep your communication with participants at a regular frequency (about once per week) to make the rehearsal schedule predictable, familiar, and routine.  Part of Music Mends Minds’ mission is to keep the community and our band members updated on the current scientific research regarding music and the brain. One of our methods is to include a research fact in weekly band rehearsal reminder emails. See below for a template, an example, and an inventory of research facts for you to use.

Growing Publicity

After getting photo release forms signed (Step 2), consider having someone from the volunteer committee take pictures at least once per month.  Submit these photos to MMM to be featured on the website and use them for increased publicity in your own network & outreach methods.

Events

As your rehearsal routine gets established, you may want to consider planning a concert or community event. This could be held at a library, community center, farmer’s market, or any other accessible space that can help increase your visibility.

As your group grows, remember to work together with your team to share responsibility of running the logistics. You may even want to consider having volunteer committee members rotate from time to time to avoid burnout.

Check-Ins

Reach out to MMM for check-ins on what is going well and any obstacles you are looking to overcome. This can be recurring or on an as-needed basis.  Example check-in questions listed below.
