Start an MMM Music Group

Step 5: Run Your First Rehearsal

There are several ways you and your team can set up rehearsals.  Many MMM groups meet on a weekly basis in the afternoons.  You might decide to do a one- or two-hour rehearsal.

We’ve put together a sample rehearsal schedule below, with some notes and suggested modifications if you decide to go with a two-hour rehearsal.

1-Hour Rehearsal Timeline Example

1. Set Up (12:30 pm - 1:00 pm)

  • Arrange the room as you like and run through your pre-rehearsal checklist

4. Rehearse Songs (1:20 pm - 1:50 pm)

  • As rehearsals grow more consistent, dedicate some time to participant requests and other time to music leader selections.

2. Welcome (1:05 pm - 1:10 pm)

  • Introduce yourselves, provide a friendly greeting, and a quick statement about why your group is meeting (keep sharing the mission regularly).

5. Close Out (1:50 pm)

  • If you have a closing song you’d like to do each rehearsal, end with that. Include a positive send-off message, any announcements, excited to see them all next time, etc. Potentially leave time for an exit “survey”.

3. Warm Up (1:10 pm - 1:20 pm)

  • This can include light body movements, mindset, vocal exercises, introductory rhythm exercises, etc.

  • You can download some suggested warm ups below, or create your own.

6. Clean Up (1:05 pm - 1:10 pm)

  • Restore the room and go through your post-meeting checklist (from Step 1).

2-Hour Schedule Suggestions

If your session is two hours, we suggest the following modifications:

  • Allow for a 10-minute break in the middle

  • Add about 5-10 minutes to the warm-up section

  • Add about 30 minutes to the song rehearsal section

If your group is preparing for a concert, you will want to dedicate the majority of rehearsal time to practicing concert songs rather than going through song requests for that day.
